# Learn Brazilian Portuguese by reading real Portuguese

Read Portuguese the way Brazil writes it, from g1 and Agência Brasil to Superinteressante, and tap any word to see what it means in that sentence, in your own language.

A gente **combinou** de se encontrar às oito.

combinou _verb, past_

agreed, arranged (combinar de + verb)

Combinar usually means to match or combine. Combinar de with a verb means to arrange to do it: we agreed to meet at eight. A gente is the everyday Brazilian way to say we.

## What to read in Brazilian Portuguese

Today, the daily edition, has headlines from Brazilian Portuguese outlets, including g1, Agência Brasil, Superinteressante, The Conversation Brasil, Jornal da USP, Revista Pesquisa FAPESP and ge. Open one and the article opens in the reader, where every word can be tapped.

The Store has Portuguese classics, among them Machado de Assis's Dom Casmurro and Quincas Borba and José de Alencar's Iracema. They are in the spelling of their time.

Reading Portuguese from Portugal? See [Portuguese](https://contextcat.app/languages/portuguese), with RTP and SAPO on Today.

You can also bring your own Brazilian Portuguese: import a PDF, save a link to a web article, or paste text. Whatever you read, it stays in Brazilian Portuguese, and help appears only where you ask for it.

## How a tap helps

The word turns bold and a note opens under its sentence with the meaning it has here, in your own language. Word analysis gives the root and the form. Select a few words or a sentence to translate just that part.

Every word you tap is saved with its sentence and comes back as a card, at longer and longer gaps, until you know it. Listen reads books, PDFs and your texts aloud in a natural Brazilian Portuguese voice, sentence by sentence.

## Is it right for you?

ContextCat works best once you know enough Brazilian Portuguese to follow a simple text and want to read more of it. If you are starting from zero, begin with a course, and come back when short texts feel within reach. The [guides](https://contextcat.app/guides) have ideas on where to start.
