ContextCat vs Duolingo: lessons or reading?

Duolingo teaches with short gamified lessons from zero. ContextCat helps you read real texts once you have the basics. What each is for, and how they fit together.

The short answer: Duolingo is a course: short, game-like lessons that take you from zero through words and grammar, with listening and speaking exercises and a streak to keep you coming back. ContextCat is not a course. It is a reader for real texts, news, books and your own documents, that explains any word you tap in its sentence, in your own language. Start a new language with Duolingo or another course. When you can follow a simple text, ContextCat is where you practise on the real thing.

ContextCat is our app. Facts about Duolingo come from its App Store listing, checked on October 27, 2026.

Where Duolingo is the better choice

  • You are starting from zero. It teaches the first words and patterns in a set order.
  • You want speaking and listening drills. ContextCat does not check your speech.
  • You need a daily nudge. Streaks, leagues and reminders are what Duolingo does best.
  • You want it free. Its free tier covers the whole course, with ads.

Where ContextCat is the better choice

  • You have finished the basics and feel stuck. Reading real texts is how you move from course sentences to the language people actually write.
  • You want to read something you care about. The news in your reading language, a novel, a paper, a letter.
  • You want words in context. Every word you tap is explained in its sentence and comes back later with that sentence.
  • You need to read, not learn. If you just need to get through a document in another language, a course will not help today. ContextCat will.
